About 1in5

Who are the 1in5

Research from the National Institutes of Health as well as Yale University shows that around 1 in 5 people struggle with reading despite having average to superior intelligence. That means that in every classroom in the United States there are between 2-4 children who need help with reading, writing and/or spelling. Many of these students have dyslexia or another language based learning difference.

About the 1in5 Initiative

The 1in5 Initiative was created to give students who learn differently a voice. As you look around, you’ll notice we have bi-monthly student to student webinars about dyslexia related topics. These are ran by students for students. Our family focused newsletter and blogs also rally around a student voice. In addition, we have localized peer-to-peer mentoring hubs that we call the YES! Program. We know that our collective experience is valuable, and we want to give the over 60 million students dealing with reading struggles a safe haven to relax and simply breathe.

About Learning Ally

Founded in 1948, Learning Ally is a national non-profit that supports K-12, college and graduate students, veterans and lifelong learners – all of whom read and learn differently due to dyslexia, blindness or visual impairment, and other disabilities. Through its extensive community events, human-narrated audiobook library and support programs, Learning Ally enables parents, teachers and specialists to help students thrive and succeed. In 2015, we have expanded our reach to include the 1in5 Initiative, a service giving students a voice.
